Number of candidates registering for GATE has increased drastically in last 5 years. From few thousands in 2009 to 1 Million+ Registrations in 2013!

GATE 2013: ANALYSIS OF REGISTERED-APPEARED-QUALIFIED CANDIDATES

A Total of 12,00,728 candidates registered for GATE 2013 and out of these 9,84,855 candidates appeared in the examination. Approx. 14% candidates qualified the exam.

23 Percent IIT Bombay students with no job!

Over 23 % students of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) are still jobless. It is reported that more than 23 % students of IIT Bombay have failed to get a job offer through the campus placement procedure for this year. If we compare it to last year, 18 % students didn’t get any job offers on campus.

This negative slide in the placement at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) in the number of students getting job offers on campus is blamed on the ongoing economic slowdown across the world.
At IIT-Bombay, the placement cell is pretty active in terms of providing relevant training and information. IIT-B placement procedure is extensive and year long process conducted for all the final year students of the institute. For the current batch of IIT-B, over 270 companies visited the campus of IIT Bombay to recruit students.
Out of total 1421 students of IIT Bombay who registered themselves for the placement program, only 1099 students managed to get a job.
Compared to the previous years, there is a 10-15 % slump in the number of job offers to the engineering students, both UG and PG (B.Tech. And M. Tech.). This situation is even worse for the students of courses like M.Sc. & M.Des., where around 50% of the students are without on campus job offers.
This situation again initiates the long going debate that clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) guarantees you a seat but does not ensure you a job and good future. Clearing JEE and getting a good job are 2 completely different things said an IIT Professor. He further added that companies judge and select a candidate on various other parameters than their academic performances.
Along with the economic slowdown another reason held responsible is poor communication and interpersonal skills of the students. Nowadays, companies rate a candidate on various parameter and interpersonal skills and communication skills of a candidate are given considerable preference. They often come out as resulting factor.
Though, for top colleges like IITs, percentage of students who get off campus placements is also considerably higher than other private colleges.
The situation is even worse in private engineering colleges. The %age of students offered a job on campus has decreased by 10-15%. Also various companies have delayed the joining dates as well.
